Reviewing Bad Music 101

I know I don't talk too much about music anymore since I talk more about movies, TV and such. But what do you expect; this blog usually centers on bad stuff, and when it comes to bad, you can't get much worse than a lot of what's on TV or in your local theaters.

Or at least, that was what I used to think, until I came across what I found just now.

Back in my day, there were bad songs, of course, and a lot of those bad songs were purposely so, just to get a laugh or make people realize that a genre of songs were just plain ridiculous. This, however, is just taking things to the border of ridiculous, stepping over it and trotting on over into the land of stupid.

Songs nowadays just make no sense and the singers sing about ridiculous things; I remember when Kriss Kross (remember them, homies?) sang songs about missing the school bus. Will Smith's little girl sings about swinging her hair around. And Rebecca Black....

Rebecca Black. Ever heard of Rebecca Black? Know her music? Her videos? Well, I'm about to introduce you to both at once, so brace yourself for a song about a day of the week.

No, not "Manic Monday". No, not "Sunday, Bloody Sunday". No, not "Working for the Weekend".

Kids, watch this - Rebecca Black's video for the Rebecca Black song, "Friday".

....

Is the only saving grace for a song nowadays that it have a strong backbeat and you can sing about any stupid topic in front of it? Not only is she not sure where to sit in a car, she also feels she has to explain the order of days from Thursday to Sunday - just in case we didn't know them. Of course, if society is welcoming music like this into its lexicon, why not?

It's okay, though; there's the typical conceit of a nicely-dressed black gentleman rapping in the middle of the song about partying, switching lanes while driving, school buses and I think I even heard a Ke$ha reference in there somewhere. Brother, please....

Then you have to have bad spelling there in the middle of the song, as if today's youth don't have enough trouble with its image from having songs like this associated with it. "We so excited"???? Good lord.

I don't know who this Rebecca Black is but due to this song, I sincerely hope I don't hear anything from her again. No offense against Rebecca or her beliefs or talent (if any), but this just does NOT bode well for her career - especially if her Vocoder breaks.

Well, that's all for now. I'm going to go listen to my Milli Vanilli tape.

Dope out.
