Dog death cop 'top job' fury

FURY erupted yesterday over why the cop who left two police dogs to die in a baking car was put in charge of a handling school - having ALREADY killed a puppy.

A cocker spaniel that Sgt Ian Craven was training died from heatstroke in his vehicle in July 2004.

He was later made acting boss of the Met's dog centre in Keston, Kent. It was there that he left Belgian Malinois bitch Chay and German Shepherd pup Tilly to die in 29C heat on Sunday.

Last night one former Met handler branded Sgt Craven, 49, "a serial dog killer".

And ex-Scotland Yard Commander John O'Connor said: "He should never have been hired to work with dogs again."

Sources said Sgt Craven was not due at work on Sunday but parked there while he went to an Olympic site meeting in Stratford, East London.

Staff were surprised he had brought the dogs from his home.

Handlers can claim mileage to work if they have their animals with them.

Sgt Craven, from Egham, Surrey, would have been eligible for about 50.

Last night he was still in a psychiatric unit after an apparent suicide bid. Police and the RSPCA are investigating.
