PRISONERS have pocketed more than £10million in compensation for treatment and injuries over the past five years.
Claims by cons ranged from medical negligence to false imprisonment.
The Ministry of Justice paid out £1.6million in the last financial year alone.
Four inmates received between £62,000 and £125,000 for injuries, another three got £25,000 for false imprisonment and 280 received payouts of less than £10,000.
One lag landed £2.8million in 2005-06 and another close to £1.14million for being left crippled when a doctor failed to send him for an urgent examination.
The ministry said all claims were "robustly defended and only settled on strong legal advice".
The Taxpayers' Alliance said: "It's an incredible and worrying amount of money. It does raise issues about management in prisons."
