Rectors for all universities is one option for review

Currently only the "ancient" five of St Andrews, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen have rectors, which are usually elected by students.

Other proposals for discussion by a review group on university governance include changing the size and c

omposition of governing bodies and the way principals are appointed.

The remit of the group was published yesterday.

It is expected to report back to the Scottish Government by the end of the year.

Education secretary Mike Russell announced creation of the group earlier this month.

He said universities should be more accountable to the taxpayer. A spokeswoman for Universities Scotland said it "welcomed the arms-length approach taken to the review of governance announced earlier this month."

He added: "We will engage with it fully and consider all issues raised by the review.

"Scotland's universities have seen some outstanding rectors that have been effective advocates for students and made va lued contributions to their universities.

"Equally, we have seen students elect footballers, TV personalities and others, some of whom have not shown the commitment, interest or engagement that is needed. "

Mr Russell also announced a similar review into college governance.<!---
