The newest members of the Baseball Hall of Fame are second baseman Roberto Alomar and starting pitcher Bert Blyleven. The ceremony took place on Sunday in Cooperstown, New York. Alomar became the third Puerto Rican to be enshrined, while Blyleven became the first player born in Holland to be enshrined.
Alomar is one of the best second basemen in baseball history. He won ten Gold Gloves and was also great with the bat. He hit .300 for his career to go along with 210 homers, 1,134 RBIs and 1,508 runs. He also totaled 474 steals and 504 doubles.
“It is a true blessing to be able to share this moment with all of you,” said Alomar, referring to the large number of Puerto Rican fans in the crowd. “I have you in my heart.”
Blyleven, who beat hitters with wicked stuff that he could locate on both sides of the plate, racked up 287 wins and 3,701 wins in his 22 seasons. While it took Alomar only two tries to be voted in, it took Blyleven 14 tries. But he’d be the first to tell you that it was definitely worth the wait to go down in history as a baseball great.
