Rupert Murdoch at the Culture, Media and Sport committee: the cast

On Tuesday, she will be older and more chastened but still may struggle to control her temper in the face of MPs' provocations. Mrs Brooks has also said she won't be commenting on the ongoing police investigations so expect some dramatic silences.

John Whittingdale MP – The Conservative chairman will act as master of ceremonies but is likely to try and steal some of the best lines for himself, as Keith Vaz did when senior policemen appeared before him ("More Closeau than Columbo" etc)

Naturally reserved, he may find the firebrand a hard role to get into.

Tom Watson MP – The Labour backbencher has become something of a prophet-figure in the last few week. When he rises the normally raucous House of Commons falls silent as he seems to have an unnerving ability to predict what will come next.

At Wednesday's Prime Minister's Questions he asked David Cameron whether he would look into claims that the News of the World had tried to hack the phones of 9/11 victims. By Thursday, the FBI was doing just that. Expect gravitas and righteous fury.

Louise Mensch MP – the former "chick-lit" author is the only member of the committee with the glamour to not be upstaged by Rebekah Brooks. While not one of the early scourges of News International, the Conservative has broken in on the scene in the last week, appearing often on Sky with icy soliloquies word perfect and ready to go.

Therese Coffey MP – While the Tory has stood firmly behind her committee chair in recent days, she made the unusual step of defending Rebekah Brooks in the chamber last week, warning that "witch hunt" was being led against her. Since then, Coffey's own party leader joined the hunt and she was one of the committee members most visible in demanding that the Murdochs come and answer questions.

Extras

Philip Davies – Conservative, is a rebellious backbencher who is outspoken on crime and immigration.

Damian Collins – Conservative, worked at Saatchi advertising before setting up his own marketing firm.

Paul Farrelly – Labour, admitted last year he "wrestled" a man to the floor in a Commons bar "entirely in self-defence".

Alan Keen Labour Co-operative, is chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Football Group and once worked as a tactical scout for Middlesbrough Football Club.

Adrian Sanders – Liberal Democrat, is a keen campaigner on animal welfare issues.

Jim Sheridan – Labour, a former trade union convener and chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Scottish Football Group.
